What ProTailored Physical Therapy Can Do For You

Why does my hand hurt?!

We are continuously using our hands throughout the day – so it’s no surprise that injuries from overuse may occur. Believe it or not, the hand is comprised of 27 bones and over 30 muscles! With injury to any structures of the hand, your ability to complete your day-to-day tasks will be drastically affected.

Check out the following list to learn more about the most common hand injuries and how ProTailored Physical and Occupational Therapists can help YOU!

Trigger Finger | Stenosing Tenosynovitis

When you make a fist and then open your hand, do some of your fingers catch or stay bent forward? If yes, you may have trigger finger. Trigger finger is most commonly diagnosed after a nodule (typically around the size of a small pea) is discovered on one of the flexor tendons of the thumb, ring finger, or pinky.

What ProTailored Physical Therapy Can Do:

Our skilled Doctors of Physical and Occupational Therapy can provide you with manual services to initially decrease the size of the nodule and ultimately eliminate it entirely. Our therapists can also provide bracing/orthotic information specific to the location of the nodule to eliminate further aggravation and encourage a quicker healing process.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Are you experiencing weakness, numbness and tingling, or pain throughout your palm and the palmar side of your thumb, index, and middle fingers? If yes, you may have carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when swelling or inflammation throughout the carpal tunnel puts increased pressure on the median nerve, which runs through this small area. Compression on the median nerve results in feelings of numbness and tingling throughout the tissues that it innervates. Without treatment or management of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – muscle wasting and pain may occur.

What ProTailored Physical Therapy Can Do:

Our skilled Doctors of Physical and Occupational Therapy can provide you with manual services to initially decrease the amount of pressure being applied to the median nerve in the carpal tunnel. Our therapists can also provide bracing/orthotic information specific to carpal tunnel syndrome to eliminate further aggravation of the median nerve and encourage a quicker healing process.

DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis

Do you have pain at the base of your thumb that flares when tilting the wrist toward the pinky side? If yes, you may have DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis. This occurs when the small synovial capsule at the base of the thumb becomes inflamed and fibrous – aggravating the tendons that run through it. Without treatment or management for DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis – increased inflammation of the synovial capsule is likely thus increasing sensitivity and pain with movement of the thumb and wrist.

What ProTailored Physical Therapy Can Do:

Our skilled Doctors of Physical and Occupational Therapy can provide you with manual services to promote tissue healing and information to prevent further inflammation from occurring. Our therapists can also provide bracing/orthotic information specific to DeQuervain’s to eliminate further aggravation of the synovial capsule and tendons of the thumb to encourage a quicker healing process.

Arthritis

Have you noticed pain or warmth throughout the joints of your hands? Have you noticed that your knuckles have become inflamed or bulky? If yes, you may have arthritis throughout the joints of your hand. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the most common forms of arthritis to affect the joints of the hand. People with arthritis in the hands typically experience difficulty holding on to smaller objects such as a toothbrush or cutlery due to limited motion throughout the joints and pain.

What ProTailored Physical Therapy Can Do:

Our skilled Doctors of Physical and Occupational Therapy can provide services to slow the progression of the disease and better your functioning. Our therapists will perform manual techniques to increase motion and ultimately decrease pain. Additionally, we will be able to provide you with information regarding adaptive equipment and products that can allow you to get through your day with less pain!

Fractures

Hand fractures may occur secondary to a fall, a motor vehicle accident, or a work related injury. Fractures are diagnosed in the hospital setting after X-Rays have been taken and analysed. After immobilization (casting) or surgical intervention (internal fixation such as pins), many people experience limitations in wrist and digit motion, experience hypersensitivity over the incision site, and display limited strength.

What ProTailored Physical Therapy Can Do:

Our skilled Doctors of Physical and Occupational Therapy can provide services to firstly decrease your pain, inflammation, and hypersensitivity – and then progress to increase your strength and range of motion, ultimately getting you back to where you want to be!

Fun fact: People who undergo surgical intervention are able to begin therapy much sooner – as the internal fixation provides great stability/integrity of the bone, whereas people who are casted must wait for the natural healing processes to take place.
