  • A Baker’s cyst forms a fluid-filled lump behind the knee and it can cause stiffness, discomfort, and the feeling of tightness in the knee.
  • It can cause pain and the pain can worsen with activity or when fully straightening or bending the knee.
  • Symptoms
    • Swelling behind the knee, sometimes in the leg as well.
    • Knee pain
    • Stiffness and inability to fully flex the knee
    • Symptoms may be worse after you’ve been active or if you’ve been standing for a long time.
  • Causes
    • Inflammation of the knee joint, which can occur with various types of arthritis or a knee injury, such as a meniscus tear.
    • These conditions can cause the joint to produce excess fluid. This can lead to the formation of a cyst.
  • How can physical therapy help?
    • Exercises that improve the range of motion and strengthen the muscles around the knee may be beneficial.

Seated Hamstring/Calf Stretch

Calf Raises

Short Arc Quad (SAQ)

Terminal Knee Extension
