What is Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome?

● Also known as “Shin Splints”

● It is an overuse/overload injury involving the lower

extremity, with pain located along the front of the

lower leg

● It is usually induced with exercise

● This could progress to a tibial stress fracture with

continued repetitive impact exercise

● It is more common in runners, athletes, and military

recruits

Causes of Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome, AKA “Shin

Splints”

● Overuse/overloading the tissue along the anterior tibia

● Sudden increase in intensity or duration of sports-related exercise

● Running on uneven terrain (ex: slanted slopes and uphill/downhill)

● Improper shoe wear during training

Common Symptoms

● Dull and achy pains down the front of the legs

● Tenderness or soreness to touch shins

● Pain is increased during or after exercise

● Pain is relieved with rest

Considerations/Ways to Reduce Additional Pain and Inflammation

● RICE Method (if appropriate): (R)- Rest; (I)- Ice; (C)- Compression, (E)- Elevation

● Modify physical activity to more low-impact exercises

● Stay away from activities or exercises that make the pain worse/increase

● Warm up prior to any type of physical activity

● Orthotics to equally distribute pressure while exercising
